The surf and weather for greater Rote region play out in three seasons:
Dry season: May-September
Wet season: December-March
Transitional/Shoulder seasons: March&April, October&November.
From June through August/September Rote is a swell magnet, picking up the much-celebrated Indian Ocean swell-train tracking up towards West Australia and the upper latitudes. Certainly every ocean has its characteristics that make up the formula for consistent, quality surf but few are blessed with those of the Indian Ocean’s strength and power.
Surf equipment:
- Your ‘everyday’ short or long board will do, but it is also a good idea for short-boarders to bring a bigger board as 'T-land' can get pretty big on a good swell.
(We also have long boards and paddle boards available for guest usage.)
- Spring wetsuit or a 2mm top: especially in the months of June to September as the trade winds can get chilly. (Not necessary during shoulder season: March and April/October and November)
- Kite surfers: If you are coming in mid May to late August (especially June/July) and you are a kite surfer, we recommend you bring your equipment as an alternative. There is a beautiful bay that faces opposite to Nemberalla, with great conditions for kiting, just half an hour motorbike ride from Malole.
- Snorkeling gear for kids. We have adult size. - Sun protection (sunscreen, hats ..)
- First-aid kit, we have our own but you are welcome to bring yours, especially if you need certain medication (there is no pharmacy available in town)
- There are cold beer and soft drinks available at the local shops. You are welcome to bring your own spirits/wine. - We have books and games available for flat days but you are invited to bring your own. - Power is 240v wall sockets standard Indonesian two prong round pin - bring an adaptor
- We have wifi internet. Bring your own laptop or media device.
- Bringing a flash drive or external memory device is always a good idea to take some surfing pics home with you.
We have a guest surf shuttle standing by formed with 2 20 ft boat equipped with a 30hp and surfboards rack so you can access the main break pronto and save your arms paddling for the outside sets.
Rote is the most southern island of the Nusa Tenggara island chain in Indonesia. It lies a few miles south of West Timor.
The Rotenese people are a very respectful, charming, predominantly Christian people.
During the traditional surf season from May to November the trade winds are consistent and offshore, allowing for comfortable and breezy evenings.
